Missions in Action
Serving through Disaster Relief
Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by. - Psalm 57:1-2
Do you have a heart for bringing the hope of Jesus to families devasted by natural disasters through provisions, services, and community outreach? St. Francis provides on-going and/or intermittent opportunities to serve those in need, either in a coordinated effort or on your own.
(If no opportunities are shown below, check back again as new opportunities are made available throughout the year.)
Western NC Mission Trip
May 18-24
St. Francis United Methodist Church collaborated with other Charlotte-area United Methodist congregations to organize a 7-day mission project in Western NC to support Hurricane Helene cleanup and rebuilding. Below is a summary of the team’s contribution during a 5-day week:
And that's a wrap! The mission team completed its work today on the home rebuild in Clyde, NC. During the week together, the team replaced floor joists in the house, placed new subfloors, erected new wall framing, helped construct a French drain, and replaced the roof. It was all hands-on deck for the roof and framing work today, and the team pulled together and finished around 3:00 PM. It was a little disappointing that we didn’t get to work on the finishing work, but the homeowner was happy with the progress, and the house has a much firmer foundation for the next team to start their work and make this house a home.
This mission team was composed of 14 people from five different churches across North Carolina, all from different walks of life, with different skillsets, and with varying levels of mission experience. What united everyone was a passion for helping others and a desire to reflect Christ's love through service and being God's caring presence to one person whose life was turned upside down by Hurricane Helene. Hopefully our new favorite resident of Clyde, NC will be moving back into their home very soon.
Thank you to everyone that supported this mission through donations, food and prayer. Together, we are the hands and feet of Christ!
United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR)
The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is a humanitarian organization that helps alleviate human suffering. UMCOR assists the most vulnerable people affected by crisis or chronic need without regard to their race, religion or status. UMCOR’s work is carried out by providing relief and assistance in response to natural and human-made disasters and supporting programs in the areas of migration, health, food security and environmental sustainability.
To this end, UMCOR collects relief supplies in the form of cleaning kits, hygiene kits and menstrual hygiene kits that are assembled by United Methodist volunteers for distribution in the United States and its territories.
This is an individual or create-your-own-group opportunity. You can help by assembling relief supply kits to help keep UMCOR’s Relief Supplies Network ready to deliver goods in the hands of those in need throughout the U.S. and its territories following disasters. It’s best to form a church or community group to gather the requisite supplies and to assemble the kits.
Here are the instructions for each type of kit:
