Director of Traditional Music

Position: Part-time

Position Overview: An experienced and dynamic musician is responsible for directing the chancel choir for worship and other special services as well as providing opportunities in music for children and youth. This position works closely with the accompanist and collaborates with the Director of Contemporary Music for preparation and implementation of music for all worship services.

A passion for excellence in all genres of worship settings is essential as well as the gifts of positive communication, leadership, relation-building, and administration. This position reports to the Senior Pastor with direction from the Staff-Parish Relations Lead Representative of the One Governing Board.

  8. Shares a vision to grow the church’s music ministry to include children, youth, and adults of varying abilities.

Job Responsibilities

  • Collaborate regularly with the Director of Contemporary Music to create and implement music ministry which brings unity and gives thanks to God.

  • Work in cooperation with the Pastor, Director of Contemporary Music, and accompanist concerning music for Sunday worship which reflects the scripture, sermon series, and/or liturgical day.

  • Direct the choir at Sunday worship, direct choir anthems, recruit choir members, and coordinate special music (solos, ensembles, instrumentalists, etc.) for worship.

  • Prepare for and conduct weekly music rehearsals (currently held on Wednesday evenings).

  • Arrange for music for services when on vacation (with approval of the pastor).

  • Coordinate with the Pastor, Director of Contemporary Music, and accompanist for special services, including but not limited to:

    • Easter cantata, Christmas cantata, Christmas Eve service, Holy Week services

    • Funerals and weddings

    • Include children and youth in music through choir, handbells, and/or other opportunities.

    • Communicate with sound and video technicians to ensure audio equipment and visuals are prepared and accurate for services.

    • Maintain music supplies and administer the music budget.

    • Participate in staff meetings and an annual staff retreat when possible.

Qualifications

  • Holds a music degree or has relevant experience.

  • Demonstrates the ability to organize, coordinate, and motivate.

  • If new to the staff, must submit and pass a recent background check as well as complete Safe Sanctuary training through St. Francis UMC.

Position Review

  • At the end of a three-month period, an evaluation will be conducted to determine if both parties are in agreement with responsibilities and performance.

  • This position will be reviewed annually by the Pastor and Staff-Parish Relations Lead Representative. A written review will be kept on file.

  • The musician or the Church may terminate the position by giving 30 days’ notice.
