Grace and Peace in the name of Jesus Christ.

Saint Francis, a congregation of approximately 600 people, is located on McKee Road in south Charlotte.  The congregation is affiliated with the United Methodist Church under the jurisdiction of the Western North Carolina Annual Conference.

As members of the Body of Christ, we are called to follow Jesus, make disciples and transform the world.

In the spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi, we celebrate God's good work of Creation.  We recognize that everyone has a gift to share.  And we seek to share our gifts as we carry the cross of Christ into the world through acts of worship, compassion and teaching.

We welcome you to join us!

Our Window

The St. Francis window at St. Francis United Methodist Church was designed by Tom Conrad of Artistic Stained Glass of Charlotte, NC.  As a symbol of our membership in the family of God, the window incorporates shattered stained glass recovered from the senseless vandalism of Jonesboro AME Zion Church.

We hail St. Francis of Assisi as a heroic figure in world history, living a life of radical obedience to the Gospel in his time, challenging us personally to grow in our faithfulness to God by living-out our imitation of Jesus in everything we do - the way we treat ourselves, our family, and everyone we meet - the way we spend our time, and our money.

The Dangerous Part of Town...In one of his first sermons, Frank Padgett, the founding pastor, reminded the congregation that we live on the dangerous side of town - that temptations to fall into a life of sin and idolatry are, if anything, MORE pressing to the rich and comfortable.  Indeed we do live in the rich part of town - in a rich city of the state, in a prosperous region of America, which itself corners a disproportionate share of the world resources...St. Francis, we remember, also came from the dangerous part of town; we choose our name in part, hoping that, like him, we and our children - by clinging closely and passionately to Jesus - might escape the dangers of what wealth we have, and grow to proper children of God.

A Brief History of Our Church

Saint Francis United Methodist Church was constituted on Pentecost Sunday, 1989 at Charlotte Latin School.  As the congregation grew, meetings and activities were held at the parsonage in the Berkeley neighborhood.  Worship was later moved to McKee Road Elementary School.  Providence Presbyterian Church was used as the site for dinners and scouting programs.

St. Francis then purchased a 10.5-acre tract of land on McKee Road, across from McKee Elementary School.  While the congregation used a farmhouse located on the property, activities and dinners were still held at the school.  Photos of the Knox House, the farm home, are located on the pastor's study.

In early 1993, the decision was made to undertake a building program.  With the help of the Western North Carolina Conference Vision Builders Society, St. Francis broke ground for construction on Pentecost Sunday, 1993.  The building was consecrated in 1994.

In the spring of 2002 the St. Francis Pavilion was consecrated.  The project was the combined effort of the St. Francis congregation and the church sponsored Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.  One third of the building is an open-air pavilion, providing ideal space for church and community activities during warm Carolina weather.
