Our Window
The St. Francis window at St. Francis United Methodist Church was designed by Tom Conrad of Artistic Stained Glass of Charlotte, NC. As a symbol of our membership in the family of God, the window incorporates shattered stained glass recovered from the senseless vandalism of Jonesboro AME Zion Church.
We hail St. Francis of Assisi as a heroic figure in world history, living a life of radical obedience to the Gospel in his time, challenging us personally to grow in our faithfulness to God by living-out our imitation of Jesus in everything we do - the way we treat ourselves, our family, and everyone we meet - the way we spend our time, and our money.
The Dangerous Part of Town...In one of his first sermons, Frank Padgett, the founding pastor, reminded the congregation that we live on the dangerous side of town - that temptations to fall into a life of sin and idolatry are, if anything, MORE pressing to the rich and comfortable. Indeed we do live in the rich part of town - in a rich city of the state, in a prosperous region of America, which itself corners a disproportionate share of the world resources...St. Francis, we remember, also came from the dangerous part of town; we choose our name in part, hoping that, like him, we and our children - by clinging closely and passionately to Jesus - might escape the dangers of what wealth we have, and grow to proper children of God.
